One year at church camp there was a girl who was obviously moved by the evening devotional. Really obviously. In fact, she was standing next to the bridge crying her eyes out. I think I was about 11 at the time and she was about 16. I had very little idea what to do to encourage this girl and, to my everlasting shame, I walked by without saying anything. There are difficulties in this life that can get out of control fast. The problem causes another problem which contributes to the first problem, causing the whole situation to spiral downward. Take for example excessive weight gain. (No, I am not thinking about any particular person here, stop it!) Gaining the weight makes you less active – you have to lug the extra weight around and it makes you tired. Being less active causes more weight gain. More weight gain makes you less active. I have a friend from college that I am very lucky to have. We were randomly assigned as roommates on our first year and that’s how we met.
