Real Help

I think sometimes we struggle with how best to help people. The easy thing to do is not always the best thing to do. If someone asks for money the easiest thing is to simply hand it over. It’s easy for us wealthy Americans to open up our wallet and give someone a couple of bucks for a sandwich. (And to hope that’s what they buy with those couple of dollars). I’m not against that. But I also think this is one of the lowest forms of help. The best way you can help someone is to develop a relationship […]

In the late 1940s, David Dunn wrote a delightful little book by the above title. He determined that he would practice, as a hobby, the art of giving himself to other people. His goal was to do small, thoughtful deeds for others as he went about his daily activities. Russ helps out at South Lyon as they continue to search. It’s not that these churches are being overly picky. I think most churches looking would take anyone of reasonably good character who preaches the Word. And yet, where are they? Finding the worthy person to fill the pulpit is a serious challenge sometimes, especially for smaller churches. That’s all they’re asking for though – […]

This is a danger lurking in our house every time the lights are off. The danger’s name is . . . Shelby, our sweet little dog. You see, our dog has dark fur and likes to lay on dark carpets. That makes her well camouflaged in the daytime. In the dark she is all but invisible. I can’t tell you how many times I have stepped on or stumbled over this dog! Someone says “oops! Sorry Shelby” at least twice a week. She never barks or bites and somehow is still a hazard to public safety. There are, however, worse […]
