Missions at Home

Being a parent is a wonderful thing. Sure, there are good moments and there are difficult ones, but hopefully we all know that children are a blessing from the Lord. “Behold, children are a gift from the Lord” (Psalm 127:3). They are also a responsibility from the Lord. He has entrusted us with the care of someone He loves very much. So . . . I think we should try hard to do a good job parenting. Sure, that means do your best to feed them and clothe them. But I also think that means a lot more. Spiritual needs are important too. “Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it” (Proverbs 22:6).

When people think about missions many think of going to a faraway place like France or China. And sure, that’s important. We should send workers to anywhere that the fields are ripe for harvest. But I want to suggest that there are mission fields not far away. There are places around you where people are ready and willing to hear the gospel. And nearest of all is in our own homes. We are called to share God’s message with our spouses and we are CERTAINLY called to share it with our children. “The way a child should go” is the Lord’s way, the way found in the Word.

I encourage you to be a good steward of every gift God entrusts you with. I encourage you to have prayers and devotions in your homes. Sing together, read the Word together, and discuss what you read. Parents – this is YOUR responsibility. I doubt anyone else can do this as well as you can, or will have as many opportunities to reach your kids as you do. And be a good model for them to look up to. YOU love the Lord and your kids are more likely to do the same. We want all people to be in heaven with us, and that definitely includes our kids. Do your best to help them get there.
