The Metropolitan Detroit Youth Chorus is currently in its 57th Year of ministering with music to people in the metropolitan Detroit area and around the country! MDYC is made up of young people ranging in age from 14 through 18 years old. As a group of a cappella singers, we provide a musical experience that encourages both ourselves and our listeners in devotion to Christ and Christian principles. Our membership has grown from its original 18 members in 1964 to over 50 members in 2021. These young people represent over 20 congregations of the Churches of Christ and other Christian churches throughout the metropolitan Detroit area!
MDYC begins its year in September with camp at Michigan Christian Youth Camp. We continue rehearsals every Sunday through December, at which time we are ready to begin our concert season! All the members enjoy performing and fellowshipping together, creating lifelong bonds. Over the years, MDYC has provided an opportunity for thousands of young people to experience Christian association on a regular basis. MDYC now has alumni residing in all 50 states and around the world.
The chorus is currently under the leadership of 9 members of our Board of Trustees and a choral director who are committed to providing Christian leadership as they interact with the chorus members. It is our prayer that MDYC will continue to grow and spread the word of God in song for many years to come.
You don’t need ears to enjoy music!
Beginning in 1994, one of our members came forward with the idea of not only singing our songs, but signing them as well. The hearing impaired could now enjoy the message of our songs. The sign language also benefited the rest of our audience by adding beauty and emotion to our performance. Signing our performance has now become a tradition, and we encourage people to invite those who are hearing impaired, as well as those who are not!
