There were several things about the arrest and trial of Jesus that were illegal
- It was against Jewish Law to arrest someone at night unless the accused
was in the act of a crime - The Sanhedrin was illegally assembled: according to their own rules.
- It was against Jewish law for a court to be held at night.
- The Sanhedrin wasn’t allowed to institute proceedings, but only to judge those who were brought before them by magistrates.
- The balloting was illegal.
Consider all that the Sanhedrin ignored up to this point
- The healing of the lame man was, in their own words, a notable miracle that no one could deny.
- The apostles have been released by an angel of the Lord.
- The apostles are witnesses of the resurrection.
- The Holy Spirit is a witness of the resurrected Christ.
- Gamaliel gives some important advice to the Sanhedrin in Acts 5:34-42.
- Jewish Law insisted that no capital case calling for a death penalty could be heard in single day.
