There were several things about the arrest and trial of Jesus that were illegal

  1. It was against Jewish Law to arrest someone at night unless the accused
    was in the act of a crime
  2. The Sanhedrin was illegally assembled: according to their own rules.
  3. It was against Jewish law for a court to be held at night.
  4. The Sanhedrin wasn’t allowed to institute proceedings, but only to judge those who were brought before them by magistrates.
  5. The balloting was illegal.

Consider all that the Sanhedrin ignored up to this point

  1. The healing of the lame man was, in their own words, a notable miracle that no one could deny.
  2. The apostles have been released by an angel of the Lord.
  3. The apostles are witnesses of the resurrection.
  4. The Holy Spirit is a witness of the resurrected Christ.
  5. Gamaliel gives some important advice to the Sanhedrin in Acts 5:34-42.
  6. Jewish Law insisted that no capital case calling for a death penalty could be heard in single day.
